How do I give my forwarding address for my deposit, and when must my landlord return it?

ForTenants

Who can do this

Tenants whose tenancy has a scheduled end or ended in the last year.

Where to find it

Leases → the lease → Overview → Your deposit.

Steps

  1. Read the deadline line, for example "Your landlord has until <date> to return your deposit or send a statement."
  2. Under Your forwarding address, search your new address, add an apartment or unit number and an email for documents.
  3. Click Send to your landlord.

What happens next

You see Sent to your landlord and the card reads "Sent <date>" with Send a new address. Your landlord is notified. When your landlord sends a deposit statement, it appears in Notices with View statement, and the bell shows "Your landlord sent a deposit statement".

Good to know

In BC, your landlord's deadline starts once they receive your address in writing. Yukon also asks for an e-transfer email. The card doesn't appear on leases with no end date or that ended more than a year ago.

Limits

Tenants can't see the deposit record or dispute a deduction in Kera. Contact your landlord or your provincial tenancy board.
