How do I edit a lease?

ForLandlordsProperty managers

Who can do this

Landlord, Organization admin, Organization members with Edit Leases.

Where to find it

Lease page → Edit (not shown on archived leases).

Steps

  1. Click Edit. The Edit lease composer opens with the status badge and every step already answered.
  2. Click a step to change it, then Continue.
  3. Click Save changes in the header.

What happens next

Toast "Lease saved". Changing only notes sends no email. Adding a new tenant with an email (invites on) sends only that tenant an invitation, and the toast reads "Lease saved and 1 tenant invite sent". Changing dates re-seeds the lease's automatic tasks and marks dependent steps (payments, rent schedule) Check this first.

Good to know

  • Awaiting acceptance and Record only: everything can be edited.
  • Active: unit, term, rent, payments, deposit, first bill and fee are In force (see "What does In force mean?"). Tenants, document, rent schedule and notes are editable.
  • Ended (Terminated or Expired): "This lease has ended. Notes and the document can still be changed; tenants and billing cannot." Who's on the lease? is locked with an Ended badge.
  • Clicking Increase rent, End lease, Turn on online payments or Manage deposit with unsaved changes asks "Leave without saving?" first.
  • A rent setup that was interrupted shows "Rent setup was interrupted. Finish it with the rent history already saved." with Finish rent setup.

Troubleshooting

If the save is rejected, the composer stays open with answers kept. A member missing Edit Leases may see some buttons but get an error when saving tenant or deposit changes; their admin needs to add the permission.
